About Me

I was born in Ankara in 1959. I have lived in Izmir since my childhood. After my boarding school years at Bornova Anatolian High School, I completed my higher education at Ankara University, Faculty of Law. During the same years, I worked as a reporter for the Turkish News Agency. I translated a book that portrays the tragedy of women in refugee camps in Palestine, into Turkish.

I pursued postgraduate studies in "International Relations" at Webster University in Switzerland and "European Union" at Dokuz Eylül University.

I am fluent in English and French. In 1991, I played an initiative role in establishing a holiday village in Seferihisar, which is still active, contributing to tourism in Izmir. I worked as a manager in the tourism sector for nine years.

In 2003, I worked as an Advisor to Ahmet Piriştina, the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, on the financial resources to be obtained from the European Union. Between 2004 and 2006, I worked as the Director of Foreign Relations and Deputy Secretary General at Izmir Chamber of Commerce.

In 2006, I was appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Secretary General of EXPO 2015 Izmir Steering Council and Executive Committee.

I was elected Mayor of Seferihisar in 2009 and served two terms in office. I brought the Citta Slow (Slow Cities) movement, which aims to recognize small towns on an international scale and develop their economies, first to Seferihisar and then to seven different geographical regions of Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

In 2013, I was elected Vice President of the World Association of Citta Slow, headquartered in Italy, and in 2014, I was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Social Democratic Municipalities (SODEM). In the local elections of March 2019, I was elected Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality with 58 percent of the votes. I still hold these positions.

I am married and the father of two daughters.

A world where life is safe, prosperity is increased and shared fairly, a world that is free, at peace, in harmony with nature and always open to renewal is possible. I continue to work with all my strength to achieve these goals.
